Match report
Gents
Was our first match of the season yesterday. Whilst we didn’t manage to get the win our army of support was craving, I can report an incredibly humane and selfless act by our acting captain for the day, Olly.
Picture the scene fellow Trundlers. Our venerable captain comes in with the team needing an eminently getting 120 runs off 12 overs with 2 wickets left.
But there on the boundary was a man in pieces. Joe had been out for a second ball duck playing a shot that was nearer the moon than the ball. The humiliation of wearing that duck shirt was starting to take its toll (his wife and kids were watching and they had told him not to bother coming home). So our captain was torn between the simple task of knocking off the runs for victory or doing the noble thing that makes Olly a leader of men. Yes fellow Trundlers, Olly may have conceded victory but he saved a broken man’s marriage. He may not have disguised his getting out for a duck that well (there is simply no way any man would have played a shot like that if they really had been trying) but it was a touching and uplifting moment.
That is what makes the Trundlers special...........
Adam
Captain Duck – (With apologies to Jez Alborough)
On Sunday last, the sky was blue
The Trundlers knew just what to do
To Ally Pally they would go
To hit some shots and have a throw
At 1:15 the team were there
With nervous looks and shifty stare
They needed leading to their fete
But who would step up to the plate?
“Ahoy there mates”, there came a cry
“Is this a cricket match I spy?”
The gathered gents turned to beseech
And Olly stepped unto the breach.
No time to waste, the hour was late
They pushed through the pavilion gate
Out to field, with spirits high
Joy unbounded, free to fly
Some good fast bowling from the skip
Bails knocked off with potent zip
Binns and Morris did so well,
To youngster Bonfield? Two, they fell!
Grainger bowled with guile and venom
Freeman with enthusiasm
Frais without the captaincy
Did find a flowing fluency
Their batters generally, weren’t too great,
With nothing much to celebrate
‘Till in came number 9, (yes, nine!)
Administering a hefty fine
to all our bowlers fast and slow
And even Buxton, what a blow
One shot went with such a !!BAM!!,
It landed South of Tottenham
But 216? We’d surely cope
So out our bats went full of hope
But after overs 3 or 4
We realised we might need some more
Grainger, Everett, shots such class
When they were out, a deep morass
Bonfields did a little better
Frais did well, a good sound hitter
Oliver our stand in wicky
Got caught out by one quite tricky
Freeman tried to whack one (fool!)
Out to someone still in school.
Then in went Joe to try to score,
Hoped for 20, maybe more
But second ball his bat got stuck
Leg stump toppled, Joe’s first duck
“’That shirt’ will now be mine” cried Kohler
“Wish I’d faced a different bowler”
The team were looking on askance
Surely now they had no chance
So to the heart of this fair tale
Such chivalry that just can’t fail
to rouse the spirit one ‘n’ all
In cricket be it bat, or ball
Out went skipper for his turn
Front foot forward, slash and burn
The team observed, as hard he tried
Shots were missed and someone cried
Morris watched, whilst turning pale
“I just hope he doesn’t fail
Such a joy his shots can be”,
“Well” said Everett, “let us see”.
He lasted for at least two more
His pads and bat, a big barn door
The innings though was short and fraught
Bowled out clean, for…, well,… erm… nought
He’d done it for his brother Joe
Let one through however slow,
He’d tried to make Joe look less bad
Amira, just a touch less sad.
Joe breathed out, the shirt was gone
Wiped his tears and joined the fun
A hundred more to win the match,
Did we? Can a trundler catch?
Gordon, Colley stood by watching
Plans for next match were a hatching
This match did its job alright
Sparked the trundlers’ will to fight
A captain’s job’s to lead his troops
And our man did it jumping hoops
He faced his balls, but had no luck
Let’s raise a glass to Captain Duck!
